Rolfing Therapies November 2022

A Certified Advanced Rolfer™ works as a problem solver in facilitating the healing process by addressing
posture, breath, movement and structural awareness. They work to alleviate pain by discovering
structural and perceptual limitations, and by identifying new options for sitting, standing, and moving.

More Than Tissue Manipulation
Unlike Massage Therapy, Rolfing treats many muscular and skeletal conditions by utilizing specific forms
of touch and mobilization. Certified Advanced Rolfers work by utilizing the following:

Palpate: The Practitioner touches the tissues through the skin, looking for indications of imbalances in
tissue texture, quality, or temperature. Examples of findings can include abdominal distension, muscular
compression, joint mobility, misalignment and imbalances.

Discriminate: Rolfing practitioners’ separate layers of fascia that have become dislodged from the correct position or stuck to muscles. Think of the fascial system as a complex internal wire network for the body. If one set of support wires becomes tight or out of place, the excess tension that is created appears as nagging joint pain, muscle soreness, or a postural shift.

Integrate: The practitioner improves the relationship between associated parts of the anatomy. Similar
to a unified web; muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments, joints, and bones seamlessly attach to each other.
Injury or misalignment in one area can cause repercussions in another. The Rolfing process allows the
body to reclaim the natural integrity of its form, thus improving postural efficiency and freedom of
movement.

Who Can Benefit?
According to a July 2022 article in Medical News Today, anyone who is experiencing low-back pain,
frozen shoulder, chronic neck and shoulder tension, pain associated with scoliosis, plantar fasciitis,
recurring motion injuries, and symptoms related to poor posture may benefit from Rolfing. Rolfing can
also expedite recovery from injuries and reduce symptoms of fibromyalgia. Additionally, the whole-body
approach of Rolfing can reduce episodes of anxiety and headaches.

Supplemental Therapies Offered by Bob Alonzi
As we stated at the beginning of this article, a Certified Advanced Rolfer is a problem solver. Thus, there
is no one treatment or therapy to remedy every pain point or physical limitation and different issues
require unique therapies. Bob Alonzi offers supplemental therapy options:

Rolfing by Formula The 10-session Rolfing series is the traditional format used by Rolfers to balance the
body and improve posture. This Rolfing series is the best approach for most people who have not
received Rolfing treatment previously.

Rolfing by Principles (Advanced Work) is performed to effect specific structural changes to enhance
function, movement, and performance. Advanced Rolfing is a preferred strategy for rehabilitation from
injury and to improve physical performance.

Movement Analysis and Postural Analysis are an important part of a Rolfing session and provide the
client and Rolfer with important information in the design of interventions and treatment.

Functional Education and Movement Awareness By educating the client about his or her movement
patterns and providing a choice to habitual behavioral patterns, the client can work on their own to
maintain the improvements gained during their Rolfing treatments.
